The Wakeland football team made its final tuneup for district play a winning one by holding off McKinney North 63-49 on Friday night at McKinney ISD Stadium.

Running back Jared White had a terrific game for the Wolverines, who improved their record to 2-1 on the season. White carried 24 times for 270 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Peyton Lewis threw five touchdown passes, three of them to Kevin Rychel.

Despite all the offense, the Wakeland defense made one of the biggest plays of the game. With McKinney North in Wakeland territory and trying to score the potential tying touchdown in the fourth quarter, Wakeland linebacker Ethan Ringenbach recovered a McKinney North fumble.

The Wakeland offense then put the game away with a touchdown.

Wakeland has a week off before playing its first District 5-5A-I game against Heritage on Friday Sept. 27 at Toyota Stadium.
